Flag for environment

The ephemeral in art is the artist’s preoccupation since ancient times and that is why Ileana Ștefănescu (PhD Candidate) believes that he should be able to control the way in which his work “lives and evolves” over time for the viewer to understand the creative concept and to interpret the perennial meanings of the artistic message in a relatively predictable way. Starting from this issue, she wants to approach differently the object of art and to treat it as a “living” work, devouring itself to the viewer over a longer period, depending on the specifications of each material, but also on the way in which they interact with each other. During this period, the works will evolve and will acquire new aesthetic valences due to the way in which the materials used react to physic-chemical factors without the intervention of the artist or of a third person.

Preoccupied with the great global problem of climate change, Ileana Ștefănescu wants to draw attention to these problems by realising this work, which is intended to be a flag for the environment. He used materials such both soil as a natural environment, and transparent plastic, the matter that invaded the entire planet. Under the transparent plastic are cornered on canvas fragments from newspapers, news that draw attention to the events of recent years regarding the natural disasters that have occurred on Earth due to pollution.  If in the beginning, the composition of the work is an abstract one, during the passage of time, it will become figurative, the fragments of earth detaching from the plastic will make it possible for the viewer to discover the images and texts from the collated newspapers.
